Mold Mycotoxin Illness & CIRS

What is Mold Mycotoxin Illness?

You have started to notice certain aspects of your life are starting make you feel worse:

  • certain rooms of your house

  • going into the office

  • going outside after a rain storm

  • turning on the A/C

  • rainy season

  • greater sensitivity to odors and fragrances

Mold can grow anywhere with humidity, ineffective ventilation or water leakage. Though we all come across mold as some point, there are certain types (species) which produce biotoxins that can make us feel sick. The first step to treating mold illness of any kind, is removing the source. Some people can expel the toxins once they are no longer exposed, but others cannot effectively.

Over time, the accumulation of toxins within the body will activate your immune system and contribute to chronic inflammation.

CIRS (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome) is a chronic illness that stems from exposure to biotoxins. It is most commonly known for its relationship to mold mycotoxin exposure. CIRS can also occur from Lyme disease.

  • Difficulty overcoming infections

  • Yeast overgrowth

  • Skin irritations. rashes, itchiness

  • Food sensitivities

  • Sensitivities to smells and chemicals

  • Irritable bowels (diarrhea, constipation)

  • nausea/vomitting

  • Nerve pains, numbness and tingling

  • symptoms of MCAS

  • symptoms of POTS

  • symptoms of mold biotoxin illness (CIRS)

  • Unexplained infertility

The single most important thing you can do if you suspect mold illness.

Remove yourself from the source. Most common sources include HVAC, poor foundations and structural support, poor circulation, humidity, home and work. Any treatment will be hindered if you remain exposed.

Why Conventional testing falls short?

Conventional testing only measures your allergy immune system response (creation of IgE antibodies) against mold species. You may not have an allergy to mold, like someone who is allergic to peanuts, but are still suffering from mold mycotoxin illness.

Currently, the most accurate testing for mold mycotoxin illness is assessing for the presence of mold spores in urine. There are a few speciality functional medicine labs that do this test, as it is not widely accepted by conventional testing methods yet.

How do you know to test for mold mycotoxin illness?

If you are experiencing a series of infections and symptoms that suggest immune activation and chronic inflammation yet are not improving with the treatment methods you are currently using, it may be time to assess your surroundings for mold. Sometimes the mycotoxin load is not the result of a current living or work environment, but a past environment where you were exposed to biotoxins you were unable to effectively excrete.

Testing can include urinalysis, serum (blood) and nasal swabs.

You have tested positive for mold mycotoxin illness (CIRS), now what?

First, you need to find the source of the mold and remediate. Second, support your body to balance your immune response, detoxify and eliminate the mycotoxins, and treat any additional lingering infections.

Can mold make other infections or conditions worse?

Yes. Mycotoxins can not only activate the immune system, but make it harder for the immune system to properly react to other pathogens.
