Honoring Dr. Alex Shikhman: Continuing Compassionate Care for Complex Chronic Illness

The San Diego integrative medicine community lost Dr. Alex Shikhman earlier this year. Dr Shikhman was a talented physician who dedicated his career to helping patients with complex chronic illnesses, including Lyme disease and co-infections, autoimmune conditions and chronic inflammatory conditions. His passing is a tremendous loss for his family, colleagues and the many patients whose lives he was such a big part of, and the Lyme community as a whole.
Although I did not have the opportunity to meet Dr. Shikhman personally after moving to San Diego, his name is respected across the Lyme communities of the United States. I have great respect for the impact he had on the field of integrative medicine, research and treatments for complex conditions. His research, and commitment to understanding the root causes of chronic illness and connection to chronic infection helped shape the expectations many patients now have for comprehensive, patient-centered treatment in California.
