Unexplained Infertility

What is Unexplained Infertility?

You and your partner have tracked cycles, timed intercourse, taken vitamins, assessed sperm parameters, had anatomical scans and used ovulation strips; there is no medical “reason” that can be found to explain why you are unable to successfully conceive and/or carry a pregnancy to term.

This is one of the most sensitive and challenging times because there is a lot of shame, frustration, devastation and anger that accompany the inability to conceive when you want to.

Unexplained infertility basically means “they do not know why.” And that can be maddening. A lot of couples walk away from those appointments being told “just don’t stress about it, it will work out” or “let’s get started on IUI or IVF right away”. IUI and IVF are very important reproductive support options for families. But, if you are not addressing potential underlying concerns, you may be impacting your success rate with these therapies.

How does functional medicine help unexplained infertility?

At the root, you need more information about both mom and dad.

You need information about:

  • specific nutrient statuses

  • toxin overload like heavy metals or mold

  • chronic inflammatory markers and source of that inflammation

  • chronic infections (EBV, CMV, Lyme disease, Bartonella, Babesia)

  • supportive hormone systems (thyroid, blood sugar, cortisol)

Did you know that the World Health Organization assessed “optimal” semen parameters for fertility in 2021 and found the optimal levels were significantly higher than the “normal” range set by a lab?

This is just one example of where more information is important to properly address any possible areas of concern.

Frequently Asked Questions?

  1. Does Dr Hall work with IUI and IVF Clinics? Yes. Dr Hall believes strongly in the value of assisted reproductive therapies for supporting families. She has found with experience that addressing underlying concerns around infertility helps to support successful outcomes of IUI and IVF.

  2. I have already done a detox, is Dr Hall going to put me through another one? Not necessarily. Many of Dr Hall’s fertility patients have already done detoxes, taken multiple vitamins and antioxidant support for months if not years. The first goal is to get more information to find the missing puzzle piece(s). With additional information, she will go over treatment options with you and determine what works best for you.

  3. Do I have to do all the additional testing Dr Hall recommends? No. Based on your thorough initial consultation, Dr Hall will discuss with you the additional testing she deems important for your case. She will discuss with you the importance of each test and which ones to prioritize.

  4. How long does treatment normally take, we have already waited for years? Treatment timelines depend on each case, but Dr Hall initially recommends at minimum 3 months. Dr Hall is sensitive to the fact that no one wants to hear they should continue to wait. But Dr Hall spends that time working with you on addressing any underlying concerns: nutrient deficiencies, toxin concerns, chronic infections and chronic inflammation. This time is not spent waiting idle, this time is spent working on your foundation of health to support not only conception but also a healthy pregnancy.
