Endometriosis & Chronic Inflammation

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a chronic and systemic inflammatory condition affecting at least 10% of women of reproductive age. Most commonly known as a condition where tissue similar to uterine tissue grows outside of the uterus. This tissue can develop around the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, bladder and pelvis.

Many people assume that endometriosis is only characterized by severe period pain and heavy periods, when in fact its systemic nature can impact the immune system, digestive system and endocrine (hormone) system, to name a few. Many women go undiagnosed for years, in part because pelvic pain severity is hard to measure, varies person-to-person and is not indicative to the severity of the endometriosis lesions (growths).

Conventional treatment is pharmacological and/or surgical in nature. Surgical intervention carries risks in itself and approximately a quarter of women receiving the surgery will need to have another surgery within 10 years. Surgical intervention changes lives for the better, and functional medicine can complement those efforts for improving long term outcomes.

  • Bloating and digestive changes

  • Constipation or diarrhea

  • Fatigue

  • Lower back or leg pain

  • Difficulty becoming pregnant

  • Pain that interferes with work, exercise, relationships or daily life

Other Conditions that Commonly Accompany Endometriosis

  • Infertility or difficulty conceiving

  • Adenomyosis

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other digestive symptoms

  • Interstitial cystitis or bladder pain

  • Migraine

  • Chronic pelvic pain

  • Autoimmune or inflammatory conditions

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Fatigue and sleep disruption

  • Underlying infections

  • Mold Mycotoxin Illness

All of these conditions are connected by: Chronic Inflammation

This is most likely why your birth control pills and pharmaceutical pain medications are ineffective. Chronic inflammation is impacted by endometriosis and impacts endometriosis. This also contributes to the return of lesions after surgery, and the possible need for more surgeries in the future. The body needs to addressed as a whole, rather than a series of unconnected symptoms and systems.

Endometriosis is more than an estrogen problem.
